How to Get Traffic

I’ve been blogging for about 8 months now. I’ve had a blog up for a while, too. I’m pretty sure I have good, if not cool, content. I actually want people to read my blog, unlike some. I do want people to read my blog and be inspired by my unusual greatness. I read every article in Blogger Knowledge as soon as they are published. I’ve noticed that only one blogger, Lou Tamposi, has linked to me. The other people who have linked to me have blogs that only I read.

I’ve decided that I should make up a list of things that might help if you want to get your blog noticed, or at least linked to. Besides, what’s the use of blogging if almost no one reads it?

Here’s the list (in no perticular order):

  • Have a big name on the web. No I don’t mean big in length, I mean you have to have done something big on the web. Evhead, is Evan Williams’ blog, which I guess gets loads of traffic. Who is Evan Williams? He’s one of the three guys who created Blogger. Biz Stone, Genius also gets loads of traffic because Biz Stone is the current Blogger Senior Specialist.

  • Write a book about writing books. If you write a book, people will constantly read your blog. It’ll be even better if you actually make up an awesome new celebration like Chris Baty’s NaNoWriMo. You need to get it published and include your URL someplace in the book. People will flock to your blog like crazy.
  • Become a geek idol. You can co-found a great company, like Steve Wozniak did, and a few years later, you’ll have more traffic than there is during rush hour in NYC.
  • Become a web designer. If you write a few books on web design, like Eric Meyer or Dan Cederholm, you’ll have many people reading your blog. You’ll also have a lot of email to check.

That’s all for now. Join me next time when I share more tips and also reveal not-so-secret Hollywood tricks used to get more traffic to unworthy sites that give blogs a bad name. Also read instructions on making your blog easier for the I’m-stupid-but-I-think-I’m-cool kids you may know. And remember, I’d be cautious if I were to walk past a McDonald’s fast food restaurant. Please link to me if you find this helpful. If you do not I might send one my flying monkeys to haunt you for the rest of your life. Thank you.

  • I went through this myself and so have others. Write the best you can about what YOU want. Credit your sources. List your blog with Globe of Blogs and other topic orientated directories. Click orientated sites like Blogexplosion encourage a scratch-my-back-I-will-scratch-yours type of attitude. Thats ok but I don’t know if it encourages reading for pleasure. I visit blogger profiles looking for bloggers with similar interests as mine. My reading list is varied but small.
When I was at diaryland I waited a long time for my first reader. I refused to share reciprocal links. My idea was link to me (in the blogroll) if you read me. i will do the same. The first person who chose to read me and liked my blog is still my online friend.
Another thing you can do is comment in different journals that aren’t on the A-list. The big players are so swamped with fans you may get lost in the crowd.
Join group blogs (teen blogs?) and participate. Decide what you can offer and whether they are right for you.
Above all keep writing for yourself and interacting with other bloggers. Who knows you might get new comments.:)
