Trillian went into version 3.0 a few days ago. It’s pretty nice I like how you can now chat with people in your local area network, using Apple Rendezvous technology, so you don’t need to be online to chat. This seems like a good feature, although I doubt I’ll need it.
I’ve always liked how you can chat with your AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN buddies using one client. AIM’s user interface comes out really horrible in Windows 2000. I’m not saying that it looks any better in Windows XP, though. Yahoo! Messenger never works on my PC. Don’t even ask me what I think of MSN Messenger. I would’ve stopped using it a long time ago if I didn’t have buddies on it.
There are some things I don’t like about the new Trillian, though. First off, I don’t like how it starts up. You actually have to work or wait (whichever you prefer) while it shows you a blue silhouette of your contact list. I guess it’s a form of DRM. I’ve never liked DRM and I never will. Another thing I don’t like is that it messes up any icon I get from Acme Icon.
What I don’t get is how it uses Apple Rendezvous technology, but Cerulean Studios won’t come out with a Mac version. There might be a Mac (OS X) program somewhere out there that’s Trillian-equivalent.
I think that whoever has buddies in more than one chat client, should get Trillian. Besides, it works for AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, IRC, and ICQ!
