Say Goodbye

A couple of weeks ago, I was dropping one of my friends off in Brooklyn. As they’ll be moving upstate soon, her family moved out of their old home in Queens and are temporarily living with relatives.

Since we were passing through her old neighborhood, we decided to stop by her old home. She’d missed out on giving a final goodbye because of exams the week before. We grabbed coffee from Dunkin Donuts and parked in the driveway.

It was pretty sad to see that it took less than a week for someone to move in. There were shadows in the window to what was once her bedroom.

I could tell that it was a very emotional moment for her. This was the home she grew up in. She has countless tied to this home and the neighborhood. Perhaps it wouldn’t have felt as bad had the house still been empty.

Seeing my friend so upset took a toll on me. It made me realize how fast time passes. We’ve known each other for almost 7 years now so there’s no doubt that she’s one of my closest friends. The feeling of moving out of your childhood home made me think of how we all have to grow up one day. It can be quite overwhelming to think that we have to leave the comforts of everything that we hold dear to ourselves when the time comes.

We took some time to reflect on her childhood in the house. Spoke about memories of the neighborhood.

The seemingly insignificant moments are those which truly shape us in the end.
