Retro Goodies

The holidays are close by and I’m thinking about what I want. There’s Eid, which is next week, Hanukkah and Christmas, both of which are on December 25. There’s also Kwanzaa and Diwali (I think).

This year, I’ve decided to make my wishlist a bit retro.

I’m planning on getting myself a Lomo LC-A, if I can save up enough money. It’s a really nice vintage Russian camera from like 1982 that’s been discontinued.

I also want a game for my olde NES. Preferably the Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet 3-in-1, since that’s what I should’ve gotten with my Nintendo.

Today, I saw that the Adventures of Pete & Pete was on DVD. The second season is coming to DVD next week. I remember seeing a few episodes as a little kid. The one I can best recall was one where little Pete tried to save time for Daylight Savings or something like that.

The last thing I want is Super Skeet. It’s this old game they used to have ads for. I was so little, I didn’t know what it was called. Just knew it was cool and you shot at ducks that were on your wall.

Today in School

Today, I had to take the PSAT in school, just as Lou did. It was sort of easy, except for the fact that I had no practice whatsoever for the test.

It’s been raining quite a lot in New York lately. Today, I saw two of the stupidest things I’ve every seen people do in rain. I saw a girl walking in pouring rain with a hoodie on, but nothing covering her head. I also saw this other girl walking with her Walkman out as if it weren’t raining. Weird, the things people do.

Stella is Stellar

Lately, I’ve been watching Stella. I really like it, and it’s currently my favorite TV show. I barely watch anything for more than 5 minutes on TV. I’ve been a fan of Michael Ian Black since I saw him on I Love the [...].

I hope the show stays on air for a while. It seems like one of those awesome shows that get a whole lot of promotion, but air for barely a season. I’m probably gonna buy the DVD when/if it comes out.

Darn Ethernet Cable

I was upgrading my wireless router’s firmware last night, so I had to connect my PowerBook to the router with an ethernet cable. My good ones were connected to my cable modem and my old PC, so I decided to use the one that came supplied with my cable modem and guess what? This morning, I tried to take it out and it’s stuck inside my PowerBook! Thanks to Google, I found a forum thread about similar experiences, but I can’t find anything that’ll fit above the cable.

Update: Fortunately, this piece of a binder clip saved me.
Lucky Binder Clip Piece
Also took care of the ethernet cable.

London Bombings

To tell the truth, I have nothing much to say about the London bombings, other than the fact that I’m really upset. My cousin was lucky and she was able to get away from Central London, where the bombings took place. She and her family live in Northern London.

I think it was extremely stupid for whatever group it was that caused today’s events to do so. I think the same way about 9/11 and the Madrid incident.

I do remember how lucky my cousin was on 9/11. He used to work in one of the Twin Towers. Fortunately, he got sick the night before and had stayed home.

A Good Movie?

Duma PosterI just saw a trailer for a movie called Duma. It seems like a pretty good movie. It reminds me of Kangaroo Jack, which was a great movie, even though the animated sequel seems horrible. I like the tagline for the movie, “Some friendships are wilder than others.” It’s really creative. I’m looking forward to seeing it. It’s coming out in March, and that’s next month, so I might not be able to see it. I could, however, buy a pirated copy for like 5 bucks from the dudes who sell DVDs on the sidewalks all around New York.

Is It Religon?

Schools these days seem to have a lot of policies that help avoid any problems with its students who might have diverse backgrounds. Many holidays and special occasions are not celebrated because of this. There is something I don’t get, though. I don’t get why, in my school, we aren’t allowed to celebrate Halloween, but we do celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. My school isn’t even a school based on a specific religion.

During the last week of October, we get letters sent home warning that we won’t be allowed into school if we wear any costumes or make-up. They don’t actually leave us outside, they just ask us to take off anything they think is related to Halloween. Our teachers sometimes secretly give us candy. But, other than that, you won’t know that it’s Halloween if you’re in my school.

St. Valentine’s Day is a whole different story. We actually have a dance that goes on every year around Valentine’s Day. We have this thing where you can anonymously (or if you’d rather, “un-anonymously”) order a gift for someone else, that they’ll get later. The cafetorium (our school’s too small for an auditorium, so our cafeteria doubles as one) is decorated for the occasion.

What I don’t get is why we refuse to celebrate a holiday deprived from a religous holiday, when we go crazy celbrating a religious holiday. I mean there’s nothing really wrong with Halloween, other than the egs and shaving cream. St. Valentine’s Day is a holiday in honor of a saint, which goes against the school system’s idea of not celebrating religious occasions.

Maybe it’s the fact that some holidays have become more commericla than others nowadays. That would be no reason for not allowing an unreligious holiday while allowing one that is religious.

I Wanna See Harry Potter!
